What we did

With “Spargelkasse” (German for “asparagus checkout”) we developed our own checkout system for farm stands, markets and farm shops. It covers all core processes, from the morning stock count through sales to the end-of-day closing, all in one application.

Today the software runs in production on around 90 checkouts and was developed entirely in-house.

Project Goal

Standard point-of-sale systems quickly reach their limits in direct sales. Our goal was therefore a system that reflects the real processes at the stall, runs reliably even under difficult conditions, is intuitive to operate by touch and meets all legal requirements.

In short: a checkout that adapts to the business, not the other way round.

Core features at a glance

  1. Optimized for fast sales at the stall

The user interface is consistently designed for speed: products can be entered by touch via color-coded tiles or via short codes (PLU). Items sold by weight, such as asparagus, can also be billed directly and without errors.

  2. Special features for direct sales

The system covers typical processes that standard solutions lack. These include a guided opening inventory at the start of the day, accepting deliveries directly at the checkout, and pre-orders with pickup date and customer details.

  3. Several cashiers at the same time

Market stalls get busy. That is why up to four people can log in to one checkout and switch between each other with a single tap. Everyone keeps their own basket: if you serve another customer in between, nothing gets lost, and at the end of the day it is clear who sold what.

  4. Reliable in mobile use

Whether at the edge of the field or at the market: the system keeps working reliably even with an unstable internet connection. All data is stored locally and synchronized automatically as soon as a connection is available again.

Summary of the project

Spargelkasse is a specialized checkout system for agricultural direct sales, developed specifically for real-world conditions outside classic retail environments.

By combining simple operation, industry-specific features and robust technology, the system supports the entire sales process, from stock management to legally compliant billing.

With around 90 checkouts currently in production, the project shows how digital solutions can create real value in traditional industries too: practical, reliable and consistently focused on the needs of its users.

“At the asparagus stand, every second counts. My job: the checkout has to be faster than the queue in front of it.”
